Constellations Of The Zodiac

By skyfire

You’ve purchased telescope for your kids or yourself and now you’re wondering what to view in the sky. There are many other things that you can view apart from moon and some planets using your small telescope. Zodiac constellation is one fascinating thing in the sky that you can view with your optical telescope.

Not all zodiac signs are visible throughout the year. But depending on the signs which are dominating in the particular month you’ll be able to view it in the night sky. So before summer you’ll be able to see aries, taurus and other signs. One thing i want you to know is constellations are not real and they’re based on the imagination of the astronomers over the years based on the alignment of the celestial objects.

December- Following constellation can be viewed in the month of December: Aries,Cetus,Eridanus,Fornax,Horologium,Hydrus,Perseus,Triangulum. Aries can be viewed in the beginning of spring or the Vernal Equinox. Depending on your location you’ll be able to view after November. It is visible between latitudes 90 and -60 degrees.

One thing you’ll notice from the list is that these constellations can’t be seen in the months where they’re dominant in the sky this is because of sun is in it’s corresponding constellation makes it hard to view those constellations. Instead you’ll be able to view them during exact opposite months of the year. You’ll see Aries in November-December but not in march-April in months when they’re dominant. One more interesting thing about constellation is that they contain variety of galaxies finding them in the sky is nice experience. You need to experiment with your lenses in order to view some of the constellation and depending on the type of telescope you’ve the image quality will vary a lot.

When I lived in the UK, where I grew up, I had a rough idea what some of the constellations were. Now I live in the southern hemisphere, I'm totally lost. The only one I still recognize is Orion, because he still looks pretty much the same upside down as he did right way up. The only thing is, his sword isn't hanging from his belt here, it's sticking straight up - which I can't help feeling is a little bit rude...:)

Many thanks for this. The 13 Moon Mayan Calendar has 'power animal' names for each 28-day moon. Starting with Bat moon, Scorpion Moon, Deer Moon etc. I understand that each of these was a particular constellation. Presumably the Scorpion moon relates to the constellation of Scorpio. Does anyone have info relating EACH of the 13 'Mayan moons' to its specific constellation? Thanks!
