Canon PowerShot SX130 IS

By

Canon powershot SX series has some of the best cameras for professional photographers and hobbyists. Canon recently released another camera model in powershot SX series- which is SX-130IS. This new model SX 130-IS took big leap in resolution than it’s predecessor in the series. From the list of superzoom cameras this one seems to be one of the worthy competitor with lots of quality features.

The Canon Powershot SX-130IS  is perfect for those who are interested in wild-life photography as it gives excellent image quality with plenty of shooting options. Let’s take a look at some of the interesting features of this camera.

Canon Powershot SX 130IS Features

Resolution

Canon Powershot SX 130IS is 12 MP camera with slightly larger physically-sized sensor. It has a focal range of 28 to 336mm versus 36 to 360mm in 35mm equivalents. It has few more shooting modes than it’s predecessor like miniature and fisheye with optimum resolution.

Build and Design

This model looks similar to the earlier model in this series - SX120IS. It comes with plenty of new features though - 720p HD video with stereo recording, blink technology, intelligent contrast correction, face and motion detection and a narrower 80 to 1600 ISO sensitivity range. In comparison to SX120IS this model is slightly larger and about a half-ounce heavier.

Display and Controls

This display comes up with a 230,000 dot composition and is adjustable for 5 levels of illumination. The display becomes difficult to use in some bright outdoor conditions.

It is easy to get around with the controls and menu. It comes up with both automatic and manual exposure mode. There are more than 11 exposure modes of this camera which will appeal to larger market of professional photographers and amateurs.

Lens

Those who are interested in superzoom feature will definitely fall in love with this camera. The 12X zoom works well though there is some chromic aberration present at both ends of the zoom.

Video & Image Quality

The SX130IS can produce some high quality 720p HD which you outperforms earlier releases in powershot series. The image quality is really good and you can even use the zoom feature in movie capture mode. Camera is sensitive enough to record the sound of zoom and changing of controls while using camera. Though default movie storage length is low you can always upgrade to high storage card.

It also comes up with intelligent contrast feature that detects the too bright or bright areas and adjusts them automatically. It has following default “my color pallete” shooting options -default, vivid, neutral, sepia, black & white and positive film.

Battery

It comes with standard alkaline AA size battery which has limited life. Investing in rechargable niMH battery can be a good investment. NiMH batteries lasts much longer and in fact they come with rechargeable feature. If this one area taken care of by photographer then i guess this camera is well worth the money.

Pros

  • Reasonable Price
  • Fairly compact
  • Good shutter lag and AF performance
  • Good light
  • Good video quality

Cons

  • Lengthy flash revival times
  • Slower maximum lens aperture
